A love-hate thriller

With the death of possibly the most well known performer of our generation, we thought we'd take a quick look at the media coverage of an an individual who has enjoyed a long running love-hate relationship with our media.

I say 'enjoyed' due to the far-fetched tales of sleeping in an Oxygen chamber that have since been revealed as hooks mastermined by his PR team to gain media attention and further enhance the bizarre side of his image which he was quite happy to push.

And perhaps in gratitude for the entertainment he gave them, the British press have been kind to say the least, even omitting the infamous abuse allegations from their daily obituarys.

Even Martin Bashir who some might say sparked abuse allegations in his ITV interview and showed obvious dislike for the star was quoted defending him in the Sun newspaper, saying 'his lifestyle may have been unorthodox, but I don't believe it was criminal.'

It all reminds us of a certain Jade Goody who enjoyed a similar ride... now I wonder what Michael Parkinson has to say on the matter ...?

Network your way to success

Serial Entrepreneur and Dragon’s Den star James Caan has been in the press recently advising companies to network their way out of the credit crunch.

He says "Relationships are quite simply critical to business success. The companies with the strongest working relationships are the ones that will come out on top through these tough times”.

We agree with James; in our experience people that network are more successful and that's why we started the Gosforth and Jesmond Business Network.

The network provides local business people with the opportunity to meet, network and generate some new sales leads. We meet 4 times a year and the next meeting is on Wednesday 24 June from 6-8pm at Opus Gallery in Gosforth. Brewing up the perfect story

Ever wondered how to make the perfect cappucino on one of those shiny coffee machines? Well, so did David Old, video journalist at the Journal newspaper.

As part of our work for Costa and to promote their 7 out of 10 prefer Costa messaging we invited him over to Costa Coffee at the MetroCentre to try his hand at being a Barista Maestro for the day.

He was so impressed with the challenge that he made a video on his experience, but as he had to hold the camera he used Costa's very own Barista Maestro, Carl as his body double.

No Rock & Roll scoops website of the week!

Congratulations to our sassy underwear client, No Rock & Roll , they've been picked as Whispermag's website of the week!

A quick poll in the office revealed that 75% of us would browse the internet when looking to buy a bra (and that's not including the men!)

New research by Orbitalmedia also shows that internet shopping in 2009 is at an all time high and will reach an uplifting £2.4 billion! It just goes to show the importance of keeping up with online media when running a campaign - depending on the client it can be just as valuable as traditional print editorial.

Nice to know the team's hard work has paid off. Now for some online shopping ...

Yasmina's hired!

Congratulations to Yasmina Siadatan who beat Kate Walsh to win the final of The Apprentice last night.

Yasmina did a fantastic job on the final task; to create a product, brand and advertising campaign in just three days.

We've all questioned whether The Apprentice contestants really are "Britian's brightest business prospects" (remember Philip and pantsman!), but we know how long brand development and marketing strategy takes so can really identify with how hard last night's task was.

So congratualtions to Yasmina, we hope she enjoys her new position working for Sir Alan's digital advertising division.

I wonder if Amscreen needs any help with marketing...

When fame Boyle's over...

The news that Britain's Got Talent (BGT) star, Susan Boyle has been admitted to The Priory with exhaustion has got us thinking about the importance of celebrity representation and media training.

Susan became an overnight hit after her first performance on BGT, attracting a mass of media attention, millions of hits on YouTube and A-list fans such as Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore.

It's what most reality TV stars dream of - but with no agent, no guidance and no media training, it's no wonder the 48 year-old church volunteer found it all a little overwhelming!

We're sure that with a little media training and some professional support Susan could enjoy a lot more than her 15 minutes of fame, we're just waiting for her call...
